The dark night - 55 Fiction

“It’s the last night”, Gopal swore as he slept restlessly.

His children and wife were tugging on the torn blanket in the cold pavement.

"If I don’t get a job, we’ll return to our village tomorrow.."

Rishi stumbled into his BMW, hiccupped loudly turning on the Ignition..

Darkness enveloped stretching out its ominous arms!

I have left the end open for interpretation depending on whether or not you are an optimist or a pessimist.

The story is partly a comment on the BMW hit and run incident but also inspired by a Sanskrit verse

"raatrim gamishyati, bhavishyati suprabhatam
bhaasvan udishyati, hasishyati pankajashree
ittam vichintayati, koshagate dwirefe
Ha Ha hanta, nalinigaja ujjahaara"

This is a dark verse, about a bee that is buzzing at night time, thinking, the night will pass, the morning will come, the Sun will rise and lotuses bloom and so on and so forth. Meanwhile, the darkness laughs at the temerity of the transient bee to dream..

  1. Dark and sad but a very connected to the reality of today.

  2. That's a really well-written post Sowmya. It's amazing how much meaning can be crammed into 55 words!

I think there is no optimistic angle to this story - whatever little there is, is erased at the very mention of the BMW hit-and-run incident.
